the french newspaper Le Monde entered into a content partnership with the American company artificial intelligence (AI) Perplexity this Wednesday (17). This move comes amid growing competition between AI startups for deals with news publications, aiming to improve the responses of their products.

The agreement grants the Perplexity access to Le Monde content to enrich its search engine responses. In return, the newspaper will use the startup's technology, which is supported by Nvidia, to develop new AI products.
The partnership also aims to support the outlets whose content is used in the responses generated by Perplexity.
“At Le Monde, we have been continually seeking new partnerships with leading AI players to broaden our audience, expand our development capabilities and build new revenue streams,” said Louis Dreyfus, CEO of Le Monde.

Perplexity has already struck deals with more than a dozen media partners, including the Los Angeles Times and the Independent. Under those deals, the startup shares a portion of the advertising revenue with the publishers.
Meanwhile, AI companies face lawsuits from groups of media and news publishers, who accuse them of illegally using content and articles to train AI models.
