Following the tradition of launching advertisements to engage the public for the World Cup, Nike launched, three days before the start of the competition, its commercial that brings together stars from the past and present in a clash in the metaverse. Entitled 'Nike FootballVerse', the piece features names such as Ronaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Mbappe and players Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd.
The video published by Nike begins with scientists discussing a dilemma: who would win a duel between French star Kylian Mbappé and world football legend Ronaldinho Gaúcho at their respective peaks? The solution found by scientists was to use virtual reality to open a portal that integrated the past and future into a metaverse.
In an exciting football match, other football stars join the two. During the battle, the stars face adversities typical of the metaverse, such as the transformation of the field and reality and a transposition of different worlds. At one moment the players appear in pixels, at others in 3D, all based on the controls of the laboratory where the plot takes place.
In an excerpt from the commercial, Ronaldo Fenômeno, a Brazilian idol, appears alongside his other two versions, from the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, with the help of virtual reality technology.
The advertising piece makes a nod to a new reality that has been discussed with the internet, that of Web3.0, where hyper realistic simulations are possible, and even the resolution of dilemmas created by the space/time of the physical world.
Nike also launched a website where it is possible to explore virtual communities and access the sports giant's environments on platforms such as Roblox and Rocket League.
