Pope Francis will attend this year's Group of Seven (G7) leaders' summit to discuss the challenges presented by artificial intelligence (AI), said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, on Friday (26).

The Pope warned this year against the “perverse” dangers of AI and renewed the call for global regulations to use it for the common good.

The G7 meeting will be held in the southern region of Italy, Puglia, from June 13 to 15, and will bring together the leaders of the United States, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada and Japan, as well as some special guests.

“It is the first time in history that a pontiff will participate in the work of the G7,” Meloni said in a video message.

She said the Pope will participate in a session dedicated to AI, calling it “one of the greatest anthropological challenges of our time.”

“I am convinced that His Holiness’ presence will make a decisive contribution to the elaboration of an ethical and cultural regulatory framework for Artificial Intelligence,” said Meloni.

Italy, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the G7, this week approved a bill that aims to establish basic rules for the use of AI, allocating investments to the sector and defining sanctions for AI-related crimes.
