The details
  • The initial release of the new Advanced Voice Mode OpenAI started in July but only reached a select few users of the ChatGPT.
  • During the delay, the OpenAI upgraded its AVM to integrate custom instructions and memory, enabling more personalized interactions and conversation retrieval.
  • A OpenAI It also improved the AVM's ability to understand accents and softer, faster utterances, as well as adding five new nature-inspired voices (and removing the Scarlett Johansson-sounding “Sky” voice).
  • AVM will not yet be available in several regions, including the EU, UK, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
Why does it matter

With the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, writing about AI agents and superintelligence, the advanced voice mode of ChatGPT seems more relevant than ever. If we’re going to interact with AI every day – it needs to sound and feel human – which is exactly what AVM is trying to achieve.

Editor's Note: If you don't already have access to advanced voice mode in your app ChatGPT, try uninstalling and reinstalling the application.
