American epidemiologist Anthony Fauci, who led the fight against covid-19 in the United States, announced this Monday (22) that he will no longer be the health advisor to the country's president, Joe Biden.
In a statement, Fauci, 81, also said he will step down from the position of director of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which he held for 38 years.
The doctor gained worldwide recognition when he opposed the denialist speech of Donald Trump, then president of the USA.
At the time, Trump denied the doctor's calls for a slower economic reopening, in addition to ignoring the requirement to wear a mask and other protective measures.
In July, Fauci had already stated that he would leavearia the position of White House health advisor until the end of Joe Biden's term, who declared his “deepest gratitude” to the doctor in a note from the White House.
“Thanks to the many contributions of Dr. Faucci to public health, many lives were saved in the United States and around the world”, said the president, who added that the country “is stronger, more resilient and healthier thanks to him”.
