The Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), which is the country's official index for measuring inflation, was 0,61% in April. Despite being 0,10 percentage points below that recorded in March (0,71%), in the last 12 months the price increase was 4,18%. In April last year, ariation had been 1,06%. According to IBGE, all nine groups of products and services surveyed had an increase, but Health and personal care were those that had the greatest impact.
Yes, we are talking about this “monster” called inflation, which is nothing more than rising prices. Do you know when you go to the pharmacy – after a month or more – and that pack of cotton wool, or that medicine for continuous use is more expensive? So, this is inflation touching your real life!
According to IBGE research analyst, André Almeida, pharmacy products were the main villains this time:
“.. justified by the authorization of an adjustment of up to 5,60% in drug prices, from March 31st”, he explained.
Other sectors that contributed to inflation increasing in April were personal hygiene items (decelerating from 0,76% in March to 0,56%) in April, mainly influenced by perfumes (-1,09%) and prices in health plans, which increased by 1,20%.
“There was incorporation of monthly fractions of readjustments of new and old plans for the 2022 to 2023 cycle”, adds the researcher.
Another group that contributed to the inflation result in April (with 0,15 pp) was Food and beverages, which accelerated from 0,05% in March to 0,71%.
Food at home increased by 0,73% in April. The items that impacted prices were:
Eating away from home increased by 0,66% compared to March.
Snacks slowed from 1,09% to 0,93%. But meal (plate of food) went the other way, and rose from 0,41% to 0,51%.
Not everything was bad, and some foods dropped in price, especially onions (-7,01%) and soybean oil (-4,44%).
Inflation in the Transport group slowed down and increased by 0,56%, contributing 0,12 pp to April's IPCA.
“The 0,44% drop in fuels contributed to this result, which had registered an increase of 7,01% in March”, explains Almeida. Only ethanol (0,92%) rose in the month while diesel oil (-2,25%), vehicle gas (-0,83%) and gasoline (-0,52%) had a drop in prices.
Airfares rose 11,97% in April, and also had a major impact on general inflation (0,07 pp).
Metro fares rose 1,24%, pressured by the 6,15% increase in Rio de Janeiro (3,54%) from April 12th.
The 1,11% increase in urban buses was influenced by increases of 15,75% in Fortaleza (9,16%) as of March 19, and 33,33% in Belo Horizonte (6,67%) , from April 23rd.
Completing the group, intercity bus prices fell 0,25%, although they registered an average increase of 5,77% in Campo Grande (5,58%), as of April 1
