The boys from the biggest K-pop band in the world, BTS, will begin fulfilling mandatory military service in South Korea. The announcement was made by the group's agency, BigHit Music, which stated that the boy band should stay away from the stage for next three years. Kim Seok-jin, the oldest member of the band, was the first to be called up. Jin will turn 30 in December.
According to the statement, the group's return is scheduled for 2025.
“Both the company and the members of BTS are looking forward to reuniting as a group around 2025, following the service commitment,” reported Bighit Music, which is part of Hybe, the conglomerate that manages the group's career.
In South Korea, all men between the ages of 18 and 28 – who are considered fit – must serve in the Armed Forces for a period of 18 to 21 months.
The current law provides that artists who receive a government medal can postpone fulfilling this obligation until they are 30 years old, which is the case for some of the members of BTS, who were distinguished in 2018 with the Order of Cultural Merit.
On Saturday (15), the group gathered in their home city of Busan for their first concert since the surprise announcement in June that the members had joined forces.ariatook a break to focus on their solo careers, which shocked the band's fans around the world.
The announcement in June came close to the deadline for deciding whether or not the band would have an exception to the obligation to enlist for mandatory military service in the country.
