Being a woman in Brazil: constant search for equality, combating violence and harassment

1 – Half of Brazilians know at least one woman who suffers domestic violence

60% of Brazilian women know at least one victim of domestic violence and 36% declared that they themselves had suffered some form of domestic violence, including psychological and physical violence. the most reported forms; one in ten declares to have suffered sexual violence.

Research Support networks and institutional outlets for women experiencing domestic violence in Brazil, carried out by Instituto Patrícia Galvão and Ipec, with support from Instituto Beja, also points out that a large majority of Brazilians consider that people should support/report when they realize that a woman is suffering violence.

2 – 4 in ten women have suffered sexual harassment, but few men admit the practice

Suffering x practicing: the score is far from complete! While 45% of women say they have already had body touched without your consent in a public place, only 5% of men admit to having done this.

Furthermore, 32% of women claim to have experienced harassment/sexual harassment on public transport, but no man acknowledges having ever practiced this type of violence. The unprecedented research carried out by the Instituto Patrícia Galvão and Ipec, with support from Uber, also reveals that 31% of women declare that they have already suffered sexual abuse or attempts.

3 – 30% of women have been threatened with death by a partner or ex; one in every 6 has suffered attempted femicide

57% of Brazilians know a woman who has been the victim of a death threat from her current or ex partner; 37% know a woman who has been attempted or has been a victim of intimate femicide. This is what the survey “Perceptions of the Brazilian population about feminicide” shows, carried out by the Instituto Patrícia Galvão e Locomotiva (November/2021)

93% of respondents agree that death threats are a form of psychological violence that is as serious or more serious than physical violence. 97% agree that women who remain in violent relationships are at risk of being killed and for 87%, ending the relationship is the best way to end the cycle of domestic violence and prevent femicide.

At the same time, the moment perceived as the greatest risk of murder for women who suffer domestic violence from their partner is precisely the breakup of the relationship for 49%, although for 28% it is at any time.

90% know what feminicide means and only 7% have never heard of the feminicide law
