Bolsonaro is 'the man who wanted to be Trump', says The Economist

The President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), was featured on the cover of the British magazine The Economist released this Thursday (8). With the title "The man who would be Trump", the publication draws a parallel between the Brazilian chief executive and former North American president Donald Trump, his political idol. In the illustration, Bolsonaro poses in profile with the presidential sash and Trump's shadow is printed in the background. "Bolsonaro prepares his Big Lie in Brazil" is the subtitle of the headline.

Trump declares support

Moments after the magazine released its new edition, former president Donald Trump took to his social network, Truth Social, to declare his support for Bolsonaro's re-election. This Thursday (8), the former head of the White House wrote:

“The President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, 'tropical Trump' as he is affectionately called, has done a great job for the wonderful people of Brazil.”

Trump added that the current president “loves Brazil above all else. He is a wonderful man, and has my complete and total endorsement!!!”

What the Financial Times says

The title of the article is “Win or lose, Jair Bolsonaro represents a threat to Brazilian democracy”. The subtitle that accompanies the call says “All signs are that he will lose an election and say he won”, alluding to the gesture of Trump, who refused to accept his defeat in the presidential contest with Joe Bien in 2020.

USA, 6 January 2021

Trump's refusal, at the time, culminated in the invasion of the Capitol during a session of the US Congress, in which Biden's victory would be confirmed by allies of the former president in which 5 people were killed.

“Joe Biden was talking about the United States when he warned, on September 1, that 'democracy cannot survive when one side believes there are only two results in an election: either they win or they were cheated'”, begins the text, making allusion to Trump. “He could very well be talking about Brazil”, he adds.

“Brazilians fear that Bolsonaro could incite an insurrection, perhaps like the one America suffered when a mob of Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021 – or perhaps even worse,” the magazine states.

Electoral system

“Brazil’s electronic voting system is well administered and difficult to tamper with. But here's the problem: Bolsonaro keeps saying that the polls are wrong and that he is on track to win. He also continues to insinuate that the election could somehow be rigged against him”, quotes the The Economist,.

The text continues to inform that, after the American crisis, the head of the Brazilian Executive starts to discredit the national electoral system and, mainly, defend the printed vote, mirroring the movements of the former American president.

A year ago, in September 7th holiday celebrations, Bolsonarists invaded the Esplanada dos Ministérios, which had been blocked by the Federal District Police, and demanded the dismissal of the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). At the time, the government of the Federal District ordered increased security at the site in order to prevent possible attacks.
