Florida governor signs law to regain control of area managed by Disney

“Today the corporate kingdom finally comes to an end”, declared DeSantis during the signing of the law approved two weeks ago by the state Parliament.

“This legislation ends Disney’s self-governing status, makes Disney live under the same laws as everyone else, and ensures that Disney pays its debts and its fair share of taxes.”, he added.

The Republican politician and the company fell out last year when the Disney criticized a law promoted by DeSantis which prohibits addressing issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity in primary schools in Florida without parental consent.

In retaliation for this criticism, the governor signed in April a law to eliminate Disney special district, which includes its Orlando theme park, before June 2023.

The company, which employs more than 75 people in Florida, has managed this 100 km² district as a local city hall since the 1960s. It collects taxes and guarantees essential public services, such as garbage collection and water treatment.

The new law, which takes effect immediately, does not annul this special district, but rather replaces its leadership. From now on, the government will appoint five members to the board of supervisors, who must be approved by the state Senate.
