King Charles III withdraws British residence from Harry and Meghan

King Charles III took away from his son Harry and his daughter-in-law Meghan Markle the right to use Frogmore Cottage, the couple's residence in the United Kingdom, according to the newspaper The Sun. The two live in the United States and have been experiencing moments of tension since who decided to leave the court. The situation worsened after Harry released a controversial memoir with intimate details of the royal family.

According to the British tabloid, Buckingham Palace sent “an expulsion notice” to the couple, who left the United Kingdom in 2020 and, since then, have multiplied attacks against the royal family.

Frogmore Cottage was granted as a residence to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex by Queen Elizabeth II in 2018 as a wedding gift. The five-bedroom residence is close to Windsor Castle in west London.

The renovation that the couple made, worth more than US$2,4 million (around R$12,5 million), financed with public money, caused a scandal, and Prince Harry had to return the amount.

Also according to The Sun, Charles III did not propose a new residence to the Dukes of Sussex, which means that they will not have a royal residence during their few visits to the United Kingdom.

This decision appears to be in retaliation for the publication, earlier this year, of the memoir “What remains”, in which the youngest son of the British monarch comes to terms with his family.

The tabloid also reported that the king had asked Prince Andrew to move into Frogmore Cottage. The idea is to reduce the expenses of his younger brother, who currently lives in a luxurious property in Windsor.

When contacted by AFP, Buckingham Palace declined to comment on this information.
