The survey carried out by the Locomotiva Institute concluded that 25% of Brazilians have high political intolerance. The problem was also observed in 32% of those who identify with both ideological extremes.
Seven out of ten Brazilians have difficulty talking to people with political opinions different from theirs. Research released today by the Locomotiva Institute shows that political intolerance is at astonishing levels. The culture of hate exposed its tragic side this weekend, with the murder of PT member Marcelo Arruda by Bolsonarist Jorge Guaranho, in Paraná.
According to research, 73% of people are unable to have a constructive conversation, based on different political opinions. Therefore, 38% of people interviewed said they never expressed their positions on political issues. 1.960 people, over 18 years of age, in 120 cities were interviewed for the sample. The margin of error is 2,2 percentage points, up or down.
The survey used a questionry to measure the level of intolerance, with a score from zero to ten for situations that illustrated reactions and came to the conclusion that a quarter of the population interviewed (25%) falls into the highly intolerant category.
And the further to the left or right the person positions themselves, the greater their intolerance. In fact, a curious fact is that at both extremes the rate of high intolerance is exactly the same: 32%, while in the center the rate is 18%. Of the people interviewed, 37% said they did not identify with either side of the current polarization.
