The health condition of Pope Francis, hospitalized since Wednesday (29) in Rome, registered "a clear improvement" after "treatment with antibiotics" against "infectious bronchitis", the Vatican reported this Thursday (30).
“As part of the clinical controls (…) infectious bronchitis was detected which required the administration of infusion-based antibiotic treatment which produced the expected effects, with a clear improvement in the state of health”, indicated the second daily report from the press office of the Holy See.
The Vatican also reported that the pontiff could be discharged “in the coming days”.
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi, channels that carry inhaled air to the pulmonary alveoli. It sets in when the tiny cilia that line the inside of the bronchi stop eliminating mucus present in the airways. This accumulation of secretion causes them to become permanently inflamed and contracted, mainly causing cough.
