Fernando Santos has left command of the Portugal national team, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced this Thursday, five days after the team's elimination in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. The two parties reached an agreement to "end the highly successful journey that began in September 2014", informed the FPF, whose management "will now begin the process of choosing the next national coach".
“I leave with an enormous feeling of gratitude. When you lead groups, you have to make some difficult decisions. It's normal that not everyone is happy with the choices I made”, said Fernando Santos in a video published on the federation's website.
The 68-year-old Portuguese coach had stated last Saturday, regarding the elimination from the World Cup (1-0 defeat to Morocco), that he did not plan to resign, but according to the local press, the FPF already wanted to terminate his contract. , which would go until the 2024 Euro Cup.
