The American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and the administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Samantha Power, will announce the resources at an event on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).
The assistance aims to “deliver essential services and achieve tangible progress for citizens in countries experiencing democratic opening,” USAID said in a statement.
Of the US$225 million, at least US$110 million (R$533,5 million at current prices) will be allocated to private sector projects for Nepal, which has been on the path to stability since a peace agreement ended in 2006. , with a civil war that left more than 17 thousand dead. The resources will come from the United States Development Bank.
The aid will also include US$145 million (R$703,2 million at current prices) in US government funds for job creation and responsible management of public finances. It will also include grants, such as those from the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, which will support civil society groups, rural electricity and climate projects in countries such as Moldova, Tanzania and Zambia.
Blinken and Power launched the project last year, after the start of the war in Ukraine, amid fears that democracies were threatened by authoritarian states such as Russia and China.
Since then, several democracies have suffered attacks, such as Niger, the scene of a coup d'état, or Sudan, plunged into a war between rival generals.
