Elected deputy for the Republican party in the United States, George Santos presented himself to court this Wednesday morning (10). He was formally charged by the US Department of Justice with fraud, money laundering and theft of public funds. Born on North American soil, the first congressman with roots in Brazil to reach a position of power in the USA was arrested and will hear charges in a federal court in New York. Find out more about this controversial figure.
george santos he became a phenomenon on the North American right when he presented himself as the first openly gay and right-wing parliamentarian, something that does not usually “combine” with the religious doctrines that underlie conservative ideologies.
Because he was the son of Brazilian immigrants and because of his connections with North American Trumpism, he took photos with other Brazilian right-wing politicians and became a kind of conservative “example of success” here:
But the exposure revealed a web of lies, with accusations of embezzlement even in Brazil.
According to reports made both by the international media and in Brazil, Santos invented a large part of his biography, including his real name, religion – he had falsely claimed to be Jewish –, his education and work experience when he contested the legislative elections of the year passed to a seat in the House, representing areas of Long Island, New York.
In Brazil, an embezzlement case that had been suspended was requested to be reopened by the Public Prosecutor's Office, after witnesses discovered that Santos was the same person who carried out scams with stolen checks, and who circulated as a drag queen in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro:
George Santos is also accused of embezzling and falsifying campaign resources for a US congressman, as well as sexually harassing a man who allegedly received a job offer from his office and of recanting when he rejected his advances.
Santos ruled out resigning from his seat in the Chamber, despite appeals from other congressmen, both from the Republican and Democratic Parties.
In an interview with television presenter Piers Morgan at the beginning of the year, he admitted that he lied about his biography.
“I was a terrible liar on some issues,” he acknowledged. “It wasn’t about fooling people, it was about being accepted by the party,” he added.
The president of the House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, stated that “we reviewedaria the accusations” before considering whether or not George Santos should be removed from Congress.
