A video has gone viral on social media in which Bolsonaro supporters, who have been camping near barracks for anti-democratic acts for days, claim that the “Haarp antennas” are responsible for the heavy rains hitting Brazil this spring. A woman says bad weather is caused by antennas and not global warming or "cow farts." Where does this story come from? Does it have any basis?
The answer is no. The rains in Brazil were not “sent by Haarp antennas”.
O Fakebook.eco – an initiative of Climate Observatory, which combats environmental misinformation – explains that the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (Haarp, the acronym in English for High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program) is often cited in rumors and conspiracy theories as a kind of “hidden cause” for storms, hurricanes or earthquakes around the world, which is nothing but a good lie.
Na verdade, or Haarp its main objective is to study the physical processes that occur in the highest layers of the Earth's atmosphere (ionosphere), aiming to improve communication systems and their everyday applications such as Wi-Fi, mobile internet for cell phones and location-based mobile applications.
The publication also highlights that climatological events – such as clouds and air currents – are generated in the troposphere or at most in the stratosphere, the lower layers of the atmosphere. Therefore, as there is no interaction, it is not possible to control the climate.
