Demographic Census collection extends until December

O IBGE is experiencing difficulties hiring workers in certain locations. Across the country, IBGE has 95.448 census takers in action at the moment, just 52,2% of the total vacancies available. The State with the greatest deficit of census takers is the Mato Grosso, with only 36,8% of the number of vacancies occupied.

“Almost half of the Census was carried out in these two months. In other words, the operation is delayed. We were hoping that the operation would close in the first week of October”, said Cimar Azeredo, Research Director at IBGE. He believes that IBGE may need more resources for the process to complete within the estimated time frame. “It is very likely that we need more resources,” said Azeredo.

Until October 2nd, censuses were 104.445.750 people, in 36 households, the equivalent of 49% of the estimated population in the country. But the pace is reading compared to the 2010 survey: at that time, 86,9% of the population had already been registered.

According to the director of the institute, the decision to extend collection until early December is accompanied by a commitment to anddeliver population count data at the end of the year to the Federal Audit Court, to subsidize the division of State and Municipal Participation Fund.

“Where the job market is hotter we have more difficulty hiring census takers”, explained Cimar Azeredo.

Hiring more census takers

IBGE prepares a Provisional Measure to allow for emergency hiring of census takers under extraordinary conditions.

“We are also working on improving the remuneration of these census takers', to make it “more attractive”, said Cimar Azeredo, adding that they are also seeking to improve communication with the population to provide information to the census takers.

About 2,27% of households visited so far have refused to respond. Regarding the type of question88,2% of households responded to the basic and 11,8% to the expanded.

A most of the questionaries (99,5%) was answered in person, while 81.620 households chose to respond via the internet and 85.309 via telephone.
