Earthquake in Türkiye and Syria

Turkey, the scene of a 7,8 magnitude earthquake in the early hours of today, is in one of the most tremor-prone areas in the world. The country sits on the Anatolian Plate, which has two major faults – the eastern and the northern. The eastern fault borders the African and Arabian plates. The other is connected to the Euro-Asian plate, and crosses the entire Turkish territory. When the African and Arabian plates move, Turkish territory is literally “squeezed”. (UOL)
