“I don’t know exactly what my future will be like, but I don’t want to completely move away from a sport that gave me everything”, declared the former world number 1 on Radio Television Switzerland (RTS).

The 20-time Grand Slam winner then stated that he feels “relieved” after announcing his retirement.

"My knee wouldn't let me continue, I wasn't progressing well enough, and then I had an unsatisfactory MRI result, so I told myself it was time to stop“He explained.

The Swiss later acknowledged that he had “tears in his eyes”, but declared himself “happy to have taken this step”.

Federer announced in a statement last Thursday (15) his retirement after the Laver Cup, a competition that starts next Friday (23) in London and runs until Sunday (25).

The Swiss has not played since July last year, when he was eliminated in the Wimbledon quarterfinals due to a knee injury.
