G7: Taliban treatment of women could be a 'crime against humanity'

The treatment given by the Taliban to women and girls in Afghanistan could be "a crime against humanity" - said the foreign ministers of the group of the 7 most advanced economies in the world (G7), this Thursday (22), asking that the decision to ban their access to university be reversed.

“Gender persecution can constitute a crime against humanity, according to the Rome Statute, of which the Afeganistão is part of it,” the foreign ministers said in a statement, referring to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

“The policies of Taliban intended to erase women from public life will have consequences for the way our countries interact with the Taliban,” they added.

The government Taliban No. Afeganistão was criticized around the world this week for his decision to ban higher education for women. In March, they had already removed girls from high schools.

In its statement, the G7 said these measures must be reversed “without delay”.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, whose country holds the rotating Presidency of the G7, considered that the decision to ban women from university education is another step towards “the Stone Age”.

O G7 brings together the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Japan and the United States. Outside this forum, Türkiye and Iran joined in the condemnations.

“This ban is neither Islamic nor humane (…) Let us hope, God willing, that they renounce this decision,” declared Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Çavusoglu, in a conversation with the press.

In Tehran, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said he hoped the Afghan Taliban would “quickly open the way for the resumption of girls’ education at all levels.”

The ban was announced in Afeganistão less than three months after thousands of young women passed the country's university entrance exams.
