Ukraine announced, this Friday (17), that it has recovered enough energy generation capacity to face shortages, after months of restrictions due to Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.
“For almost a week there have been no power cuts in Ukraine,” Prime Minister Denis Shmygal said on Telegram, noting that “repairing damaged equipment will take many months.”
According to him, some areas may continue to suffer power outages due to repairs.
“There was no capacity deficit in the electrical system throughout the week. And, today, there is no shortage expected. The power plants produce enough electricity to cover current consumption”, confirmed the operator Ukrenergo, on Telegram.
After a series of military setbacks on the ground in the late summer and fall, the Kremlin began in October to regularly bomb Ukraine's transformers and power plants. It plunged millions of civilians into darkness and cold.
This Friday and “during the weekend, electricity production will continue to meet consumption,” Energy Minister German Galushchenko said in a statement.
In the country's capital, Kiev, rail vehicles returned to circulation “after 56 days out of service”, highlighted the head of the city's military administration, Serguii Popko.
