Two lesbian women and LGBTQIA+ activists have been accused of promoting homosexuality and sentenced to death in Iran, according to an activist group trying to prevent the execution. Their names are Zahra Sedighi Hamedani (31) and Elham Chubdar (24). The conviction took place in the northwest of the country, in the city of Urmía.
The young women were accused of promoting Christianity and having relationships with media outlets opposed to the Iranian government, according to the NGO Hengaw.
A third woman, who faces the same charges, is also detained but has not yet had a sentence handed down.
The Iranian court confirmed to the AFP agency the conviction for “spreading corruption on Earth”. This is the most serious charge in the Iranian penal code.
