Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), ordered the blocking of the accounts of ten people and 33 companies identified as financing "illegal and undemocratic acts". Shortly after the election results on October 30, a series of protesters supporting Jair Bolsonaro (PL) blocked highways asking for Army intervention.
According to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, the blocking of assets was an “appropriate and urgent” measure, with the aim of “interrupting the injury or threat to law”.
Furthermore, Moraes ordered the Federal Police to take statements from all the names on the list within 10 days, and that investigators must take the necessary steps to deepen the investigation.
In an order, the minister states that the investigation carried out by the PRF shows that the businessmen were behind “the provision of complete structure (meals, bathrooms, tents, etc…) to maintain the abuse of the right to assembly, in addition to the provision of various trucks to reinforce the criminal demonstration.”
“This scenario, therefore, requires an absolutely proportional reaction from the State, in order to guarantee the preservation of fundamental rights and guarantees and remove possible economic influence in the propagation of anti-democratic ideals and actions”, wrote the judge.
“Effectively, the inauthentic and coordinated movement of trucks to Brasília/DF, for an illicit meeting in the vicinity of the Army Headquarters, with the aim of breaking the constitutional order – including requests for “federal intervention”, through an absurd interpretation of art. 142 of the Federal Constitution – can constitute the crime of Violent Abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law (art. 359-L of the Penal Code)”, warned Moraes, who is the rapporteur of the case at the STF.
