The number of irregular entries into the European Union (EU) in 2022 increased by 64% compared to the previous year, reaching its highest level since 2016 — reported the European border agency Frontex, this Friday (13). According to the regulatory agency, in 2022, 330 illegal entries were recorded, 45% of them via the Balkan route, in the eastern part of Europe.
“This was the second consecutive year with a sharp increase in the number of irregular entries,” said the Frontex in a statement.
Citizens of Syria, Afghanistan and Tunisia represented 47% of these immigrations last year. “The number of Syrians practically doubled, reaching 94 thousand,” the agency added.
Around 10% of irregular immigration were carried out by women, and 9% by minors.
