Open for signatures from the academic community, the manifesto warns: "democracy is at risk!", and calls on the community to resist this and other problems such as increasing poverty, scientific denialism and attacks on minorities.
On the 5th, the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) published its own manifesto in defense of democracy and free elections in 2022, joining other initiatives that repudiate and prevent the risk of “institutional rupture” in this year’s elections. .
Written by emeritus professors at the university, the manifesto now has more than 600 supporters from members of the university's academic community and “repudiates any actions that could contribute to the constitutional rupture and political setback resulting from yet another coup d'état”. The document is open to the public for signature.
The text calls on the academic community and other democratic sectors of civil society to “raise their voices” to avoid a setback to what it called the “long night of arbitrariness and authoritarianism that befell the country” during the 1964 military coup.

Joint act with USP on August 11
On August 11th, the Unicamp rectory and other entities will hold a public event with the joint reading of the “Cshout out to Brazilians in defense of the Democratic Rule of Law!“, petition launched by the Faculty of Law of the University of São Paulo (USP).
To date, the document headed by USP jurists has almost 800 signatures, among 133 civil society entities and individuals, including former ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), artists, journalists and businesspeople. Its official reading will take place at Largo São Francisco, also on the morning of the 11th. The 2022 letter is a re-reading of a manifesto that called for the return of democracy in the midst of the Brazilian Military Dictatorship, in 77. “Letter to Brazilians” turns 45 this Monday (08).
As the October presidential elections approach, the reaffirmation of the values of democracy has become the center of the agenda of different actors of Brazilian society (UOL). After the letter from USP jurists was released, it was made public last Friday (05) the “entrepreneurs’ letter”, articulated by the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp).

The manifesto was responsible for unite long-time political adversaries around the same purposes. With less than 90 days before Brazilians go to the polls, the letter calls for the defense of “sovereignty of the people” which is “expressed by vote” and “exercised in accordance with the Constitution”. Among others, they sign the manifesto “In Defense of Democracy and Justice”:
The text also states that the rule of law, the maintenance of democracy and development are “the greatest meaning of 7 September in this year". Fiesp's initiative is part of a preventive movement to defend the country's democratic institutions and a direct response to coup threats and attacks by President Jair Bolsonaro the electoral system, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
“I call on all of you now so that everyone, on September 7th, takes to the streets for the last time. Let’s take to the streets for the last time,” said Bolsonaro at the convention for his presidential re-election bid. His calls have been seen as clear threats to the desire to subvert the rules of the democratic game.
