One person dies of hunger in the world every four seconds, NGOs report

More than 200 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) denounced the increase in hunger in the world, this Tuesday (20), at the UN General Assembly. The institutions call on governments from across the planet, meeting in New York, to act "to stop the global hunger crisis."

According to the 238 NGOs, “345 million people suffer from acute hunger, a number that has more than doubled since 2019”. An open letter was signed by organizations from 75 countries “to express outrage at the explosion in the number of people suffering from hunger and to make recommendations”. The document was delivered to the members of the UN General Assembly, which began this Tuesday (20).

In addition to several political leaders, representatives of civil society are also present at the meeting in New York. The diplomatic meeting is considered the most important in the world.

🟣"It is unacceptable that, with all the agricultural technology currently available, we are still talking about hunger in the 21st century", declared Mohanna Ahmed Ali Eljabaly, from the NGO Yemen Family Care Association, one of the signatories of the letter.

🟣”It’s not about a country or a continent. And hunger never has just one cause. This is about the injustice of all humanity,” he added.

Data explained

The signatories of the letter explained the calculation method for the hunger numbers: they are based on the numbers released by the world report on the food crisis from the beginning of September, which records the number of people who go hungry according to the different categories of the Integrated Classification of Food Security Phases (CIF).

The report cites 166,02 million people in the ICF 3 category (acute crisis), 38,6 million in ICF 4 (emergency) and 481.500 in ICF 5 (hunger).

If category-specific mortality rates are applied, organizations achieve a range of 7.745,7 to 19.701,7 deaths due to hunger per day, i.e. one death every 4,25 to 12 seconds.
