Lula at COP27: “Brazil is back”

“I am here today to say that Brazil is ready to join the efforts to build a healthier planet again. Of a fairer world, capable of welcoming all of its inhabitants with dignity – and not just a privileged minority”, he said Squid already at the beginning of his expected speech at the COP27.

The president-elect addressed his speech inside the country – businesspeople, agribusiness, institutions and society – and outside – international leaders, former commercial partners and environmentalists – focusing on the principle of common responsibility for the future of the planet, but at the same time , differentiated.

“The Planet warns us that we need each other to survive. Alone we are vulnerable to climate tragedy,” he said. Squid.

Squid spoke of the importance of developed countries allocating resources to loss and damage funds, “so that poorer countries can face problems created by rich countries, but which disproportionately affect the most vulnerable”.

The Brazilian leader was once again applauded when he said that “not by chance” the phrase he has heard most from leaders of different countries is that “the world misses Brazil”.

“I want to say that Brazil is back. He is back to reconnect with the world and help fight world hunger once again.”

Amazon and original peoples

“There is no climate security for the world without a protected Amazon,” he said Squid, announcing that the fight against climate change will have a prominent place in the next government.

“We are going to prioritize the fight against deforestation,” he stated, citing data from the last four years.

“The devastation will be in the past and environmental crimes… will now be fought relentlessly”, added the president-elect. He said his government will recreate the inspection systems that have been destroyed over the past four years.

Squid confirmed the commitment to create the specific ministry for Brazilian indigenous peoples. “We are going to create the Ministry of Original Peoples, so that the indigenous people themselves can present proposals for dignified survival, security, peace and sustainability. The original peoples and those who reside in the Amazon region must be the protagonists of its preservation”.

And Agro?

In a direct message to the Brazilian agroindustry – which overwhelmingly supported Jair Bolsonaro in the presidential elections –, Squid said he believes that the sector will change its stance in the face of the challenges of the next government

The United Nations (UN) International Conference on Climate Change – COP27 – began on November 6, in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. The COP is the UN's major annual event whose objective is to discuss actions aimed at combating climate change.
