Melting glaciers reveal hidden passage in Switzerland 2 years ago

The Tsanfleuron Pass, a small piece of land that connects Vaud and Valais, Switzerland, 2.800 meters above sea level, has resurfaced from the ice after 2 years of hiding.

The strip of land that makes up the Tsanfleuron Pass has been hidden since the Roman era, 2 years ago, until the dry winter and torrid European summer wiped out the ice that covered it.

The pass is located at the junction of this glacier with that of Scex Rouge, at an altitude of around 2.800 meters, between the cantons of Vaud and Valais, in southwestern Switzerland. It is also the location of the Glacier 3000 ski resort.

For several days now, it has been possible to see the strip of land completely uncovered, although “in 2021, a measurement revealed an ice thickness of around 15 meters in this area”, stated a statement from Glacier 3000.

For Mauro Fischer, an expert at the University of Bern, “the loss of thickness of the glaciers in the Diablerets region will be, on average, three times greater this year compared to the last 10 years”.
