Bill Gates questionthe letter that asks for a pause in the development of artificial intelligence

The founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, took a stand against calls to pause the development of artificial intelligence (AI). In an interview with Reuters, Gates argued that stopping the tools would not solve the challenges presented by the technology. Instead, the philanthropist suggested finding better ways to use AI. The testimony comes after a group of experts, including Elon Musk, call for a six-month pause on the development of AI systems that exceed the capabilities of the company's GPT-4 OpenAI.

The letter rejected by Bill Gates and signed by more than a thousand experts from the global technology sector, released last week, highlights possible social risks associated with these systems, including information bias, automated jobs and a risk to human civilization.

During interview, Gates questionor who can have such authority to stop the development of technology. Furthermore, he appeared confused, asking whether all countries would agree to halt the development of OpenAI.

“I really don't understand who they are saying can stop, and whether all countries in the world agree to stop and why stop (…) But there are many different opinions in this area”

For the North American businessman, the AI revolution could be similar to what happened with cell phones. He is very optimistic about the development of artificial intelligence tools:

“Clearly there are huge benefits to these things… what we need to do is identify the tricky areas,” he narrated.

But there is one issue that must be taken into consideration in this story. Gates may have a favorable outlook on AI because Microsoft be intensely linked to OpenAI, owner of ChatGPT. The company founded by Gates injected 10 billion dollars into the company that broke the internet with its new tool.
