Deforestation in the Atlantic Forest fell 42% in the first five months of this year, according to a new bulletin from the Deforestation Alert System (SAD), a partnership between the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation, Arcplan and MapBiomas.

The Atlantic Forest suffered the felling of 20.075 hectares (ha) of forest in the period of one year, between October 2021 and 2022, corresponding to more than 20 thousand football fields. The data comes from the Atlantic Forest Atlas, research carried out by the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation, in partnership with the National Institute for Space Research (INPE).

The Senate approved this Tuesday (17) the provisional measure that extends the deadline for joining the Environmental Regularization Program (PRA) for producers who are in areas of the Atlantic Forest, but managed to remove parts of the text – included by federal deputies – that facilitated the deforestation of the biome. Environmentalists celebrated, but are alert: the MP will return to the Chamber of Deputies and may undergo new changes.
In the Earth Charter, published this week by Earth News, Lourival Sant'Anna talks about the amendments to a provisional measure (1.050), approved this week by the Chamber of Deputies, which remove protections from the Atlantic Forest Law of 2006. This law prohibits works, such as highways, in areas of primary vegetation, never deforested, and those of secondary vegetation, in an advanced state of regeneration, which have been recovering for several decades. The law makes an exception when there is no alternative. The amendment to the provisional measure removes the entrepreneur's obligation to prove that he has no other place to carry out the work.
A project coordinated by Fiocruz intends to restore 6,7 hectares (equivalent to 67 thousand square meters) of Atlantic Forest area in the Massif da Pedra Branca region, in Rio de Janeiro, where the Fiocruz Mata Atlântica Campus is located. However, the Atlantic Forest is also one of the most threatened biomes on the planet, with less than 10% of its original coverage still preserved.
Researchers from the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (Esalq) at USP, in Piracicaba, analyzed information from environmental restoration areas in the Atlantic Forest and found that the process uses less than 8% of the tree flora existing in the original. This means that the recovered area has fewer species. The study helps guide work and improve the recovery of degraded areas of the Forest.
