A Microsoft develop a project that prometransform a person's photo (in 2D) into a three-dimensional avatar, with just a few clicks. Entitled "3D Avatar Diffusion", the platform was announced at the end of 2022 in a scientific journal article, but is not yet available to users worldwide. But, on the website, the visitor can understand how the mechanics of the algorithm work.
Similar to Ready Me Player: 3D Avatar Diffusion was developed with the aim of popularizing avatars and offering a tool that allows you to export 3D features to different metaverses.
Published in Arxiv, a scientific journal from Cornell University, New York, the article on the diffusion model provides information about its development in Microsoft Research.
According to the publication, the researchers involved used a set of more than 200 3D facial models to train the algorithm. With this, the article suggests that all diversity and variety of faces and profiles will be respected.
Unlike applications that promeYou have to stylize that photo you like in a futuristic version, with the tool Microsoft This will really be possible, according to the creators. It's like you uploaded a 3×4 and got a GTA character back to use wherever you want. 😉
See the example given by the platform: the transformation of a photo into a 3D digital sculpture ⤵️
In addition to replicating the photo on the avatar, the tool is also capable of responding to text commands. This way, it would be possible to edit the sculpture based on the user's wishes, just as it works with other avatar production platforms already launched.
The issues involving the use of images and the tool's privacy policy have not yet been discussed.
Costs and user charges were also not specified, but when it is available to the general public – another big unknown – the platform is expected to be thoroughly tested.
