YouTube will have labels for AI videos and intensify the fight against deepfakes in elections

YouTube published guidelines on its official blog that detail its approach to content generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

According to the statement, signed by the CEO Neal Moham, YouTube recognizes the potential of Generative AI to stimulate creativity. However, the company is aware of its responsibility to protect the community and will therefore require identification of clips that contain digital elements made or modified.

In the coming months, the YouTube plans to launch a tag system for content produced or edited using artificial intelligence. The creators themselves will be responsible for declaring whether the video is artificial, that is, whether it was created with this type of digital resource.

The label will be applied both to works created from scratch and to modifications of real people's faces or actions, including those deepfakes.

In addition to tagging, which may be duplicated on videos with more sensitive content, content that violates community guidelines will be removed. This encompasses, for example, the representation of realistic violence or the dissemination of misinformation.

These resources will arrive in time to be implemented in at least two important electoral processes in 2024: the presidential elections in the United States, already in the primary period and scheduled for November 5, and the municipal elections in Brazil, with the first round scheduled for October 6th.

Youtube and AI

In addition to labels and restrictions on certain content, YouTube revealed that it will offer communication channels so that users can request the removal of AI-generated content that simulates an identifiable person, regardless of whether they are famous or not.

Additionally, record labels and record holders copyright may request the removal of imitations of an artist's voice that do not have appropriate authorization for use.

YouTube has confirmed the use of artificial intelligence internally in certain processes. The company has implemented internal features to improve speed and accuracy in content moderation systems.
