2023, the end of a long nightmare

This January 2023, 80, has a special meaning. We will officially mark the end of one of the darkest periods in Brazil's contemporary history, certainly the saddest and most suffocating since the military dictatorship that ended in the mid-XNUMXs.

Since Jair Bolsonaro took office in January 2019, we have been plunged into a nightmare, filled with obscurantism, authoritarianism and hopelessness. Tragically, it coincided with this period in which we were governed by an inept, the occurrence of a pandemic that claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Brazil. Many of these deaths could have been avoided if the fight against Covid-19 had been taken seriously by the federal government. A shame, a scandal, a crime.

The accomplices of authoritarianism

No less serious and shocking was the realization that many more people than we could imagine shared the follies and aberrations promoted by Brasília. People who openly flirted with a coup d'état, with authoritarianism, with darkness, with disrespect for human rights. Among them, businesspeople, political leaders and journalists, seen until then as committed to republican values.

But with Lula's election this nightmare is over and so we have a lot to celebrate on the night of December 31, 2023. We have restored some vigor to our democracy, we have opened some doors to hope for better days.

Saviors of the country do not exist

But this is still not enough for a Brazil that we still desire, more fair, more prosperous, less violent. In this 2023 and in the following years, we need to build the foundations of a new agenda for the country, based on education, sustainability and inclusion.

We need to build a Brazil with strong institutions, resistant to the rulers of the day, whoever they may be. We need to stop believing in leaders who sell themselves as saviors of the country – they do not exist – and assume our fundamental role in this process, through the full exercise of citizenship.

Brazilians need to stop believing in falsehoods promesses and build their future, independent of those occupying the main positions in the Republic.

no illusions

O Curto News, which has just completed 5 months of life, was born with the mission of helping to build a new agenda for Brazil. We have no illusions that the journey over the next few years will be easy, including the return of risks to Brazilian democracy, but we are confident that we can get there.
