The Brazilian owner of the courts: who is Bia Haddad?

She is the name of the moment. It may even be that you don't follow tennis or don't even like the sport. However, you've certainly heard of Beatriz Haddad Maia, better known as Bia Haddad. The tennis player from São Paulo became the highest placed Brazilian among the top 20 in the world.

In the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) ranking update, released last Monday (15), Bia appears in 16th place. With this mark, she is only behind Gustavo Kuerten – if the men's ranking is also taken into account -, who led the league for 43 weeks between 2000 and 2001.

Despite being defeated in the final of the WTA 1.000 in Toronto, Canada, by former world number 1 Simona Halep, Bia managed to move from 24th place in the world rankings and climb eight positions. In the match, she took a 3-0 lead in the first set, but suffered a comeback.

In the same championship, the Brazilian defeated the current number 1 in the world, the Olympic champion and also another former leader in the ranking.

It was the first time that a tennis player from Brazil reached the final of a 1.000 tournament – ​​the most important category on the circuit, second only to the Grand Slams.

Bia was the fourth Brazilian, in the Open Era of tennis, to participate in three finals in the same season. The other three Brazilians were Maria Esther Bueno and Vera Lucia Giugni, in 1968, and Suzana Gesteira, in 1969.

Bia Haddad's name also appears on the internet with questioncomments about his possible relationship with the politician, lawyer and professor Fernando Haddad. However, they have no connection.
