Venezuela is governed by an authoritarian regime, led by Nicolás Maduro. The Judiciary has been subjugated, the press is censored and elections are not clean and reliable. Political opponents of Maduro are persecuted and there are hundreds of accusations against the regime of torture and murder.

There is no sign that Maduro, in power since 2013 after the death of his predecessor, Hugo Chávez, has any plans to abandon power, regardless of whether or not elections are held.
