Road accident leaves at least 34 dead in Algeria

At least 34 people died and 14 were injured this Wednesday (19) in a collision between a bus and a utility vehicle near Tamanrasset, in southern Algeria, the African country's Civil Defense announced.

The bus collided head-on with the other vehicle. Then there was a fire. Many victims were burned to death, according to local press.

Victim withdrawal and evacuation operations were underway, according to the Algerian Civil Defense.

According to Civil Protection, the bus was taking passengers between Adrar and Tamanrasset, two cities in the Algerian Sahara.

Speed ​​is the main cause of accidents on Algeria's roads, according to the National Highway Safety Delegation, a government agency.

In 2022, Algeria recorded around 22.980 traffic accidents that left 3.409 dead and 30.479 injured, according to the agency's director, Nacef Abdelhakim.
