Teenager invades school and kills wheelchair user in Bahia; on networks, influencers cite a climate of incitement to violence in the country

The 14-year-old teenager broke into the school he studies at, in western Bahia, and killed a 19-year-old wheelchair-bound student. Geane da Silva Brito was in the 9th year at the institution. After the attack, group prayers were held by students from Colégio Municipal Eurides Sant'Anna, a militarized teaching unit, which is managed divided between the Military Police and the City Hall of the city of Barreiras (BA). According to the local Civil Police, the shooter also carried two other sharp weapons and, apparently, a homemade bomb. The police also speak of a hate crime and publish an alleged profile of the teenager on social media.

The attack happened around 7:20 am, when students were waiting for class time to enter their classrooms. According to police, the young man jumped over the school wall and started shooting. There was a rush. Geane da Silva Brito, a young woman in a wheelchair, was unable to escape and became the target of the shooter who also stabbed her. The victim succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene.

According to the newspaper O Globo, the perpetrator of the crime – son of a military police officer who moved from Brasília to Barreiras, in Bahia – would have posted on an extremist profile the massacre plan at the teaching unit.

In it, the young man, just 14 years old, identified himself as an “enlightened being” whose anger would be discharged in “a bloody act”. In a manifesto, published three days before the crime, which the police believe was written by the young man, he makes clear his disregard for human life and Bahians which he called “disgusting”.

“…mixing with them is disgusting, it's stupidly grotesque, I feel like vomiting when one of them touches me (sic). I am pure in essence, I deserve more than that, I am a saint. I left the capital of Brazil for the merdeste (sic), and I never thought it would be so disgusting here”, the young man reportedly declared, according to the profile found on social media.

Students unite in prayers after attack

Os Geane's colleagues and other students at Colégio Municipal Eurides Sant'Anna said prayers after the attack. To the newspaper Bahia Half Day The student's father spoke about his murdered daughter:

“If I had it at the time, I would have stepped in front of the bullet to save my daughter,” said José Ferreira. He said Geane had undergone four operations in February this year and would undergo another in 2023. “A good girl, she is special,” he said.

Barreiras City Hall

In a statement, the City Hall regretted the case and offered support and assistance to the students and their families. It was also reported that classes at the school where the attack occurred were suspended for a week.

“In time, they sympathize with the family of the victimized student, expressing their deepest feelings at this moment of deep pain and consternation”, states an excerpt from the note.
