Dictatorship: 7% support the regime in the country, the lowest rate since 1989, says Datafolha

The number of defenders of democracy is rising, while supporters of a dictatorship are decreasing among Brazilians. This is what the most recent survey, carried out by Datafolha, points out. The chance of experiencing another dictatorship in Brazil was also the topic of questionary made this week.

7% of Brazilians today argue that a dictatorship is the best option for Brazil instead of democracy, shows Datafolha in a survey carried out between the 16th and 18th of August. The rate had been 9% in the last survey on the topic, in September 2021, and had not reached this level since 1898.

Letters for democracy, did they influence?

The survey interviewed 5.755 people a few days after acts in defense of democracy who mobilized thousands across the country in response to the escalation of coup threats – which include President Jair Bolsonaro.

At Datafolha, 75% of respondents judge democracy to be the best form of government, which had already been recorded in the June 2020 survey.

12% of people said that, between dictatorship or democracy, it doesn't matter. In this sample, 18% were unemployed and 17% receive up to 2 minimum wages.

Chances of a dictatorship in Brazil

When questionWhen asked about the chances of Brazil experiencing a dictatorship again, 49% said they do not believe in the possibility of this happening. 20% believe there is a high chance, 25% see little chance and 7% were unable to give their opinion. Among women, the share of those who believe that the dictatorship should return increased from 44% to 47%, between the survey carried out in September 2021 and the most recent.

The Datafolha survey was commissioned by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo and TV Globo and was registered with the Superior Electoral Court under number BR-09404/2022.
