President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will visit Uruguay on January 25, the Uruguayan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this Friday (6) on Twitter. “After accepting the invitation of President @LuisLacallePou, his counterpart from Brazil @LulaOficial will visit Uruguay on January 25th,” says the tweet.

Lacalle Pou made the invitation during his trip to Brasília to participate in the inauguration of the new Brazilian president.

He was accompanied by former Uruguayan presidents Julio Sanguinetti and José Mujica, seeking to signal unity at a time when Uruguay seeks to make Mercosur more flexible.

The Uruguayan government took the first steps towards a free trade agreement with China and presented a request to join the Trans-Pacific Association Agreement (TPP), generating criticism from its partners in the bloc, which also includes Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.

The Uruguayan chancellor, Francisco Bustillo, and his Brazilian counterpart, Mauro Vieira, “are working on the agenda for this bilateral meeting”, indicated the tweet from the chancellery.

Lula will also make an official visit to Argentina on January 23, where the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) will be held the following day, in which Lacalle Pou also participates.
