Argentina has an advantage over France in World Cup history

France and Argentina, who face each other next Sunday (18) in the final of the 2022 World Cup in search of the third world title for both, have already faced each other three times in the history of the tournament.

1930: an 84-minute game

On July 15, 1930, Argentina and France had their first duel in the first World Cup in history, held in Uruguay. At the Parque Central stadium, in Montevideo, in front of 23 thousand spectators, the game ended with a 1-0 victory for the 'Albiceleste'.

An excellent performance by French goalkeeper Alex Thépot prevented the Argentines from scoring until the 36th minute of the second half, when Luis Monti scored the only goal of the match.

But at 39, Brazilian referee Gilberto de Almeida Rego whistled the end of the game, generating surprise and anger among the French players and part of the public.

Both teams went to the locker room, but the assistant managed to convince the Brazilian referee of his mistake and the players returned to the field to play the final six minutes, which did not change the score.

France were eliminated in the group stage after their subsequent defeat to Chile (3-0), while Argentina lost the final to hosts Uruguay (4-2).

1978: the hand of Trésor

On June 6, 1978, France faced Argentina in a group stage game at the Monumental de Núñez stadium in front of 71 spectators.

Previously beaten by Italy (2-1), the 'Bleus' suffered a new defeat by the same result, which sealed their elimination, while Argentina won their first world title.

France, led by Michel Platini, was tied 0-0 with the Argentines until the 45th minute of the first half, when Marius Trésor touched the ball with his hand after a shot by Leopoldo Luque. Daniel Passarella converted the penalty for the 'Albiceleste'.

At 11 minutes into the second half, French goalkeeper Jean-Paul Bertrand-Demanes tries to stop Luque's shot and collides with the post. After leaving the field on a stretcher, he is replaced by Dominique Baratelli.

Platini takes advantage of a rebound from Bernard Lacombe's attempt and equalizes four minutes later. Later, Didier Six misses a chance face to face with Argentine goalkeeper Ubaldo Fillol. Until, in the 28th minute, Luque beats Baratelli with a shot from outside the area.

This is the 'Bleus' last defeat, to date, to a South American team in the World Cup.

2018: Pavard's great goal

On June 30, 2018, France, solid in the group stage, and Argentina, who qualified with difficulty, met in the round of XNUMX at the World Cup in Russia.

From the first moment, the 'Bleus' took the lead with a penalty taken by Antoine Griezmann. Before the break, Di María equalized by hitting from outside the area, with no chance for Hugo Lloris.

In the second half, Argentina turned around with a Lionel Messi shot deflected by Gabriel Mercado. But France left everything the same again Benjamin Pavard, who scored an impressive goal from distance, the most beautiful goal of the tournament.

Afterwards, the French returned to the lead with two goals from Mbappé in four minutes.

In stoppage time, after Messi's cross, Sergio 'Kun' Agüero scored with a header. Despite one last Argentine chance, France won the game 4-3, decisive in winning their second world title.
