Economic activity falls 1,13% in August, says Central Bank

The Central Bank's Economic Activity Index (IBC-Br), better known as the preview of GDP (Gross Domestic Product), shows a drop of 1,13% in August 2022, compared to the previous month. This was the biggest monthly retraction of the indicator since March 2021. Since last year, the IBC-Br results have been fluctuating, which shows an unstable economy.

In April and May, the country's economic growth indicator fell. In the months of June and July there was an increase. In August there is another reduction, the largest since March 2021.

When GDP grows, it means that the economy is doing well, the country is producing more. If GDP falls, it means that the economy is shrinking, a bad sign of what is really happening to the country.

As soon as the Central Bank announced the August fall, the matter began to reverberate on social media:

The IBC-Br reached 143,97 points in August. The index incorporates information on the level of activity in the three sectors of the economy – industry, commerce and services and agriculture –, in addition to the volume of taxes.

The indicator was created by the Central Bank to try to anticipate the evolution of economic activity, which is why it is called GDP preview.

The official indicator is the Gross Domestic Product (GDP, sum of goods and services produced in the country), calculated by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and is released per quarter.
