Australian fined for surfing with python

As if the presence of sharks wasn't cause for enough concern in Australian waters, a man was caught surfing with a python wrapped around his neck and ended up fined for his daring.

The intrepid surfer caused a stir in the city of Gold Coast, on Australia's east coast, after images were published of him surfing the waves with his pet reptile.

Authorities in the state of Queensland, where the city south of Brisbane is located, determined that the surfer must pay a fine of 2.322 Australian dollars (around US$1.500, or R$7.300 at the current exchange rate).

“Taking an animal into a public space, or exposing it, requires another license,” says the bulletin.

“Snakes are obviously cold-blooded animals, and although they can swim, reptiles generally avoid water,” explains the text.

“A píton acharia a água extremamente fria. As únicas cobras que deveriam estar no oceano são as cobras marinhas”, acrescentou.

The animal in question was a carpet python, a non-venomous species native to Australia. It can measure up to three meters in length and usually wraps itself around its prey to suffocate it.
