Bolsonaro is the first government official in 1 years not to attend the inauguration of president of the STF

President Jair Bolsonaro became the first head of the Brazilian Executive Branch to miss the inauguration of a top leader of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in the last 20 years. This Monday (12) Minister Rosa Weber assumed the role of president of the STF. In recent months, Bolsonaro has launched numerous attacks on the Supreme Court, the most recent of which took place during the celebration of September 7th.

The last president to fail to honor a head of the Judiciary was Itamar Franco, in 1993. On that occasion, the president was represented by the then Minister of Justice, Mauricio Corrêa, who would later be appointed as minister of the STF. Itamar was in Brasília, but was participating in a ceremony to create the National Food Security Council.

Bolsonaro, on the other hand, chose to absent himself from the ceremony and give an interview to a podcast at 19:30 pm, in São Paulo, almost two hours after the start time of the event at the STF. Vice Hamilton Mourão (Republicanos-RS) represents the Executive Branch in the inauguration of Rosa Weber.

During the ceremony, the minister cited the true meaning of the Independence of the Republic several times and defended the Constitution “which we swore to obey”.

“The judiciary does not act ex officio and the STF is the guardian of the Constitution”, reinforced the new president of the STF. “In a plural and open society, everyone can defend and debate the interpretation of the constitutional text, deserving the malicious intent of the concepts”, she reiterated. “I would like everyone to see this ceremony as a defense of democracy.”

The Federal Police are investigating whether the Chief Executive and the former Minister of Health committed crimes during the management of the Covid-19 pandemic. The determination goes against a request for archiving from the Attorney General's Office (PGR).

Institutional Crisis

Last week, Bolsonaro missed the ceremony celebrating 200 years of Independence in Congress, held on September 8th. In an interview, he claimed that he was busy with his supporters who are in the playpen at the door of the Palácio da Alvorada.
