Brazil records one femicide every six hours

More than 1.400 femicides were recorded in Brazil in 2022, which represents a record of one woman killed every six hours for gender-related reasons, according to a survey released this Wednesday (8), the day President Lula announced measures to prevent violence against women.

The total number of 1.410 represents around 5% more than in 2021 and is the highest recorded since the feminicide law came into force in 2015, reported the news portal g1, mentioning official data from the country's 26 states and the Federal District.

If homicides of women are considered, without taking into account their motivations, the number increased by 3% between 2021 and 2022, to 3.930.

The increase in femicides contrasts with a slight drop in the total number of murders last year. With 40.800 cases, the country recorded a 1% reduction compared to 2021.

“It is intolerable,” said the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during an act by International Women's Day at the Planalto Palace. “Today we are presenting a package of measures to put an end to this barbarism, but we need to go beyond combating intolerable physical violence against women,” he said.

The government announced an increase in resources for women's care centers and will recreate a preventive police monitoring program for victims of domestic violence.

Alongside his wife Janja and several ministers, as well as former president and ally Dilma Rousseff, Lula also announced that he had sent an equal pay bill to Congress.

Furthermore, Brazil will ratify Convention 190 of the International Labor Organization (ILO) against violence, including gender-based violence, in the workplace.
