Brazil defeated Peru 1-0 this Tuesday (12), in Lima, at the end of the second round of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

The Seleção's winning goal was scored with a header by Marquinhos in the final stretch (90′), after a corner kick by Neymar, which silenced the thousands of fans present at the National Stadium.

“We controlled the game whenever we could. It was a very deserved victory”, said coach Fernando Diniz at a press conference.

“I'm satisfied with what we presented in the combined results of the two games. It was very positive”, highlighted the coach after the second consecutive victory in the Qualifiers.

Brazil leads the Qualifiers with 6 points, followed by Argentina with the same score, but with a lower goal difference.

Peru is seventh with one point, alongside Chile.

The South American Qualifiers guarantee six places for the 2026 World Cup in North America and the seventh-placed team has the possibility of qualifying by playing in a playoff against a team from another continent.

Peru is saved by VAR

The game started with Brazil deeper and with a solid defense while Peru tried to press in front of the more than 30 thousand fans in the stands of the National Stadium, who didn't stop cheering.

The stadium, which has a capacity for around 45 people, was not full due to a FIFA sanction for improper conduct by its fans against Paraguay, in the 2022 qualifiers.

After the first 15 minutes in which Peru took the initiative, Brazil began to wake up and show their characteristic game, generating quick counterattacks led by Neymar, Casemiro and Rodrygo after positioning themselves better in midfield.

At 18, Raphinha gave the first scare, completing a quick Brazilian attack led by Neymar.

At 21, Argentine referee Fernando Rapallini disallowed a goal by Raphinha for offside.

But the Peruvian team continued with its offensive game, led by its captain and top scorer Paolo Guerrero and André Carrillo, to try to reach Ederson's goal.

Applying the speed and first-class touch of its players, Brazil dominated the middle and with poisonous crosses tried to penetrate Gallese's goal.

At 29, Richarlison found the net for the Brazilian team, taking advantage of a cross from the right by Danilo in a play that came back from Neymar's feet. But the referee canceled it after a long consultation with VAR.

At 44, 'Ney' threw a strong right shot that Gallese deflected with both hands, in one of the best defenses of the duel.

In the first half, the Peruvian team threatened the Brazilian goal only on one occasion, with a shot from Guerrero that went over the crossbar.

Marquinhos scores at the end

The team led by Fernando Diniz did not change its style and offensive intensity to try to open the scoring in the second half.

The Peruvian team reinforced its defensive structure, with players like Renato Tapia and Aldo Corzo at the rear.

Peru coach Juan Reynoso brought on young striker João Grimaldo at the start of the second half due to Andy Polo's injury and the change gave more speed to his team's attack.

After the first hour of the game, Brazil increased the pressure and placed Peru even more in their field, but found no space to open the scoring.

At 63, Diniz replaced Gabriel Jesus in Richarlison's place with the aim of giving his team more offensive power.

Meanwhile, Reynoso changed the bench and added striker Raúl Ruidíaz.

In the last five minutes of the game, Diniz made three changes in the hope of injecting more energy and winning.

And the celebration was not long in coming. At 90, Marquinhos went to the opponent's box and headed Neymar's corner kick to make it 1-0 when Peru was already celebrating the draw as if it were a victory.

The now leader Brazil will host Venezuela on October 12th while Peru will visit Chile.
