Searches for victims of the shipwreck in Pará continue; presidential candidates mourn deaths

The sinking of a speedboat in Pará left at least 11 dead - including a 2-year-old girl - and 8 missing. The vessel was carrying 80 people and sank near Cotijuba Island, Belém district, in Pará, on Thursday (8). The tragedy was highlighted by presidential candidates on social media and by the state government.

The presidential candidates took to social media to lament the shipwreck in the state of Pará. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Simone Tebet (MDB), Soraya Thronicke (União Brasil) and Sofia Manzano (PCB) showed solidarity with the victims. The other candidates for the position, including the President of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro (PL), did not comment on the matter until the publication of this article.

Soraya Thronicke drew attention to the fact that the vessel carried out clandestine transport. “Investigations show that the company responsible for the boat did not have authorization for intercity transport and departed from a clandestine port. Sofia Manzano expressed solidarity with the victims' family and friends and criticized the condition of the vessels in the Amazon region. “We will nationalize public transport, which will have quality and safety in all regions of the country,” she stated.

Official bodies reported that the vessel did not have permission to transport passengers and departed from a clandestine port. She traveled between the town of Camará, in the city of Cachoeira do Arari, in the Marajó archipelago, and Belém.

The boat 'Dona Lourdes 2' is from the company M. Souza Navegação, which had already been notified by the Public Services Regulation and Control Agency (Arcon) for operating without authorization.
