Home of the famous or 2022 elections? Meet 'celebrities' competing in the electoral race

Iconic and controversial personalities are part of the list of candidates for these elections. From the 1980s to the 2000s (and some much more recently) they were in the spotlight for any reason other than politics. Now, they are resurfacing and competing for a place in Brazilian politics.

It may seem like a lie, a WhatsApp fake, or even a meme, but the 2023 elections are particularly interesting when it comes to new faces – or former celebrities – competing for the vote.

There is a wide variety of backgrounds, including dancer, actress and journalist. The so-called digital influencers – or just influencers – are among the most controversial candidates.

Sarah Poncio says so: the blogger, creator of content about fashion and behavior on YouTube and Instagram, decided to run for state deputy in Rio de Janeiro. And it quickly became a meme on social media:

Sarah is not the only one in the family in the electoral race: the evangelical pastor Márcio Poncio, the influencer's father, is also a PROS candidate for the Federal Chamber.

The Pontios have a tradition of attracting the spotlight: the family is occasionally involved in scandals, including Sarah's relationship with the model Bruno Krupp (who ran over and killed a teenager in Barra da Tijuca), and the story of betrayalSarah's ex-husband, the singer Jonathan Couto, and a sister-in-law. The most recent controversy is the dispute over the guardianship of a child who was returned to the biological mother. It's practically the Brazilian Kardashian family. (Metrópole/UOL)
