Case of racism at Renner generates repercussions and protests

A customer at Lojas Renner, Awdrey Ribeiro, says he suffered racist attacks from an employee on Saturday, and the case had repercussions on social media.

The store employee accused Awdrey of putting a coat from the store in her bag. Awdrey said she actually put the coat in the bag, but it belonged to her and had been purchased at another store.

After the incident, Lojas Renner fired the employee, on Sunday (13), and issued a statement, which says: “The episode that occurred at Madureira Shopping is unacceptable. The approach taken was completely inadequate and is not aligned with Lojas Renner's values, which is why the employee responsible is no longer part of the company's workforce. We are sensitive, we deeply regret what happened and we will support the customer, making ourselves available to her.”

The case was registered as slander at the 29 Police Station (Madureira) on Saturday itself, but the victim's family returned to ask for the classification to be changed to racism.

The case, which occurred at the Shopping Madureira unit, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, raised public awareness and several people went there to protest.
