Qatar bans beer sales around World Cup stadiums

Qatar and FIFA authorities announced this Friday (18) the ban on the sale of beer around stadiums during the World Cup, in a statement published just two days before the start of the competition.

The decision to ban sales near stadiums was announced by FIFA in a statement without providing further explanation about the reasons behind it.

“Following discussions between the authorities of the host country and FIFA, the decision was taken to concentrate the sale of alcoholic beverages at FIFA Fan Fest, other meeting points for fans and in places that have a license for the activity, and eliminate the points of selling beer around the perimeter of the World Cup stadiums”, states the statement.

Even in places where sales are allowed, it will only take place between 19pm and 1am, and a 500 ml glass will cost US$14, which is equivalent to around R$76 reais at today's exchange rate.

In the note, FIFA recommends that fans do not take alcoholic drinks from their countries of origin and avoid purchasing along the way, to avoid confiscation upon arrival in Qatar.
